Where to Ride
Kahakapao Recreation Area
AKA Makawao Forest. Situated just 15 minutes out of Makawao town in the beautiful forests of Pi’iholo is a mountain bike paradise. With over 10 miles of trails, two pump tracks and an advanced skills area, there is something fun for everyone. The most popular trails include the signature flow trail Pineapple Express, the Kahakapao loop trail, and the black diamond Ravine trail. Please take note of the trail signs and maps posted in the forest, as some trails are mixed use for hiking and equestrian.
Kahakapao Recreation Area is managed by the State of Hawaii DLNR and Na Ala Hele, gates are open from 7am to 7pm daily but subject to change at the discretion of these land managers.
Kapalua Recreation Area
Located just steps out of Kapalua town is one of the best and least known recreation resources on Maui. Once the Kapalua Village golf course created by Arnold Palmer, and later the home of the Xterra World Championship is now the Kapalua Walking Trails which boast over 5 miles of paved walking trails. Twisting and turning in the forests around those paved trails is over 12 miles of single track mountain biking trails maintained by the Maui Mountain Bike Coalition in partnership with Maui Land and Pineapple. Currently in it’s infancy as a public recreation area, signage and mapping is still sporadic but for those who like to explore it’s a hidden treasure ready for adventure.
Skyline and Poli Poli
For the ultimate downhill adventure, there’s no better ride than the Skyline trail which descends from the summit of Haleakala at 10,000 feet, down through fields of lava with unimaginable views. Transition into the beautiful forests of Poli Poli on the Mamane trail, a short but epic blast of single track. Haleakala and the majority of the skyline trail is part of the Haleakala National Park, and Poli Poli is a State Recreation Area. Both areas subject to unannounced closers dictated by these governing bodies. Shoot us an email or talk to one of our local bike shops to get an update on current conditions.
