Makawao Forest Update

Makawao Trail Project Update

The lower section of the Downhill/Flow trail in Makawao forest is just about pau! While there is still a need for ongoing maintenance and small tweaks, the major elements are in place and the trail is riding smoothly. This section of trail is a major testament to what the mountain bike community on Maui is capable of when we work together toward a common vision. We greatly appreciate all of the volunteers, financial contributors and people who loaned equipment.

We are currently in a holding pattern to complete the upper sections of the downhill flow trail that are slated to be more accommodating to advanced downhill mountain bikers. Maui District Na Ala Hele has submitted an application to the State of Hawaii for capital improvements funds to complete the downhill flow trail, improve the “Renegade Trail”, build a pump track, keiki trail and skills areas. These funds will also be used to build additional parking facilities, picnic areas, and obtain signage. In addition, CIP funds will be used on other trail projects in Maui County.

Although the Maui District’s application for capital improvement projects has been approved, the state is currently waiting for all counties to complete their applications before they release any funds. In this case, Maui is ahead of the other counties.

In the meantime, Na Ala Hele has given us approval to continue refining the lower section of the Downhill Flow Trail, re-route a lame section of trail on the west side of Kahakapao Loop and plan for the revision and possible expansion of the “Renegade Trail”. Our next trail workday will be on Saturday, December 8th.

The Maui Mountain Bike Coalition’s commitment to complete the Kahakapao Recreation area is solid. We will continue working these projects until they are complete!

Jersey Fundraiser

The official Maui Mountain Bike Coalition jerseys are available for preorder. Get these limited edition cuts for one time only. We have downhill style jersey (loose, moisture wicking, t-shirt style) and a cross-country jersey (full zip, race cut, 3 pockets). Both jerseys cost $90 each. Every jersey that is purchased will generate $50 that will go directly toward building and maintaining trails on Maui! Orders are due by December 20th.

These quality jerseys are being made by Primal. They feature a custom camouflage pattern that is composed out of the shapes of the Hawaiian Islands. Support your local trails by ordering your jersey here.
